Maj. Billy Vaughn Evans was born on January 21, 1919, in Roane County, Tennessee, to John William Evans and Margaret Ethel Butler. He had three siblings, and their names were Leslie Oscar Evans, Frank Bowman Evans, and Kenneth Mac Evans.
On May 29, 1941, in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, Billy enlisted into the army to fight in World War II. He enlisted as a private, but sometime during his service, he became a major.
On July 24, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee, Billy married Mary Jean “Jean” Reid. They had two children. Their names are Mary Margaret (Evans) Eckhardt and John Reid Evans.
Billy was an agriculture teacher for the Spring Hill High School, in the city which he lived with his small family. His wife, Jean, was also a well-known teacher for the Spring Hill High School. According the 1960 Spring Hill High School yearbook, she taught History, Science, and Language Arts.
Along with being a teacher, Billy was also at one point the mayor of Spring Hill, TN. His successor was Stan Stanfill, a person I wrote a past blog about.
Sadly, on September 11, 2007, in Tennessee, Billy died. He was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee. The home Billy and his family lived in still stands at 5326 Main Street in Spring Hill, TN, and is where the Spring Hill Chamber of Commerce is located at this time.
