Lewis Hargrove was born on November 30, 1890, in Williamson County, TN, to Robert Jackson “Bob” Hargrove and Latishia Louise Ragsdale. He had three siblings, and their names were John A. Hargrove, Robert Willis Hargrove, and Bertha Hargrove.
On December 2, 1919, in Williamson County, TN, Lewis married Cleo Bridie Hargrove. They had three daughters. Their names were Mary Donan (Hargrove) Whitt, Sarah Angeline (Hargrove) Graves, and Minta Emrentha “Rentha” (Hargrove) Robinson.
Lewis was an early Police Chief for the city of Spring Hill, TN and served for 18 years, according to his daughter Rentha who wrote a story on page 56 of the book Spring Hill Everybody has a Story. Lewis was the Police Chief during the times when there was no police car and they only used whistles to stop a speeding car.
Along with being the Police Chief, Lewis was the owner/operator of a general store in Spring Hill, TN called Hargroves’ Grocery. The general store operated for years and was located on Main Street. Many people shopped at his general store and still remember it.
Sadly, on May 2, 1967, at the Maury Regional Hospital, in Columbia, Maury County, TN, Lewis died. He was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, in Spring Hill, TN. Some people still remember Lewis being the Police Chief and shopping at his general store on Main Street.
