Blog no. 14

Edgar Boyd “Ed” Whitwell was born on October 11, 1911, in Lewis County, TN to Pleasant Lee Whitwell and Maggie Johnston Voss. Ed was one of many children.

Ancestry.com family trees states that on October 13, 1933, Ed married Edna Earl McAfee. I have not found any proof saying he actually did. If it’s true that Ed did marry Edna McAfee, they had one daughter named Mitzi Claire (Whitwell) Lynch.

Ed was the owner and operator of the Gulf service station on Main Street and McLemore Avenue in Spring Hill, TN. Not only did Ed operate the service station, but he was also the Postmaster of Spring Hill and the Spring Hill Fire Chief on and off starting in 1957. If you had wanted any news about Spring Hill, TN during his time, he would be the one to ask.

Ed married Catherine Inez Staggs sometime between 1940 and 1950. They had one son named Eddie W. Whitwell. The family lived in a house behind the Gulf service station on Main Street. Both were damaged by the Tornado that came through Spring Hill, TN on January 11, 1963. The service station and their home are no longer standing today. According to the 1950 Census of Spring Hill, TN, Ed and Catherine had 3 lodgers living with them. Their names were Opal Lowe, Ruby Shelton, and Auburn Stamps.

Sadly, on September 24, 1988, in Spring Hill, TN, Ed died. He was buried in Polk Memorial Gardens cemetery in Maury County, TN next to his wife Catherine who died 14 years after. Ed was always the person that would lend a hand to any person in need of helping.

Special thanks to my friend, Naomi Derryberry, for helping me confirm some information for this blog.
