Dr. Spivey McKissack was born on September 18, 1790, in North Carolina, to Thomas F. McKissack and Lucy Jane Hudson. His father, Thomas, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and fought in Capt. Ballard’s Company, Col. Patton’s North Carolina Regiment. Spivey had 5 siblings. One of his siblings, Col. William McKissack (1781-1855,) built a home that still stands today in Spring Hill, TN.
On April 7, 1813, in North Carolina, Spivey married Susanna “Susan” (Peters) Thomson Jeffreys. They had no children and Susan would sadly die in 1841. Susan was about 20 years older than Spivey and the daughter of one of the founding fathers of Spring Hill, TN, James Peters.
On October 25, 1842, in Maury County, TN, Spivey married Eliza B. Smiser. Spivey and Eliza had 3 children, Mary, Lucy, and an infant who died at birth.
Spivey was an early physician of Spring Hill, TN, among the others, James Otey Hardin, A. H. Buchanan, Gorham Wing, A. T. McMurray, and Wharton White. He was also one of the early settlers of Spring Hill, TN.
In 1824, Spivey was elected the first mayor of Spring Hill, TN. No photo has been found YET of Spivey during his time as mayor or in general. If you have a photo of Spivey or have found a photo of Spivey, please contact me (The Ancestor Detector) or the Spring Hill, TN Public Library with your source!
Sadly, on June 3, 1864, in Maury County, TN, Spivey McKissack died. Spivey was originally buried behind his house (where Haven Hair Salon is currently located in Spring Hill, TN,) which was demolished in 1878. He was later interred in Rose Hill Cemetery, in Columbia, Maury County, TN.
